Overview

Locating in the middle east of China, the province is called "Henan" (meaning 'south of the river') because most of its territory lies on the southern side of the Huanghe River. It is also called "Zhongzhou", "Central plain", Henan is often called "Yu" for short. Henan Province is situated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, covering the southwestern part of the Huanghe-Huaihe-Haihe Plain. Henan Province is between 102กใ 21' E~116กใ 39' E longitude and 31กใ 23' N ~36กใ 24' N latitude. It is in the temperate-subtropical zone and humid--semi-humid zone, and has a monsoon climate. It neighbors on Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Hubei, Shaanxi and Shanxi. Henan has a large population; the total population in 1997 was 92.43 million.

Henan has 16 cities and 2 districts under its jurisdiction, and Zhengzhou is the capital. For its special regional advantages, abundant resources of agricultural and by-products, varieties of minerals, perfect facilities, glory historical culture and rapid development of economy, Henan becomes one of the most important provinces in China.

Lying in the middle east of China, Henan, which connects north and south, and serves as a link between west and east, becomes an important hub of inland communications of China.

As the cradle of the ancient Chinese civilization, Henan Province boasts a 5,000-year-long civilization. With a long history and splendid culture, Henan is a place propitious for giving birth to great men. Tourist attractions can be seen everywhere. There are more cultural relics and historic sites in Henan than in any other province of the country. Luoyang, Anyang and Kaifeng are all sites of ancient capitals famous all over China. Ancient cultural remains, such as the ruins of the Shang Dynasty City in Zhengzhou, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, the ruins of the Yin and Shang Dynasties in Anyang, the Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng, the White Horse Temple in Luoyang, etc. are all well-known places. There are beautiful mountains and rivers in the province. The wonderful landscape of Rock-man Mountains in Lushan County and that of Huixian City, Linzhou City and Songxian County are all well-known tourist attractions.
