Water Country in Southern China

Going out of He Garden, tourists go northward. After passing through Pishi Street and majia Lane, they come to Dongguan Street, and then turn west and then north to reach the rear gate of Ge Garden.

Ge Garden was built by Huang Yingtai, a rich salt merchant of the Qing Dynasty. As the garden is planted with a lot of bamboo it thus derives its name from the Chinese character, "ge," bamboo leaves resemble. Aside from bamboo, Ge Garden is also well known for rock gardens built from colorful Taihu Rocks. These boulders, found on the edge of the Taihu Lake, are highly prized by rock garden landscapers for their unique shaping caused by weathering. Together, the pavilions, terraces, corridors and bridges amid bamboo groves make the garden look picturesque and evoke poetic charm. Undoubtedly this is why Ge Garden is one of China's ten famous gardens.

Upon exiting Ge garden by the front gate, tourists may walk westward along Yanfu Road, and then go westward at Master shi's memorial Temple along the Qinhuai Minor River, pass by Tianning Temple to Juanshi Dongtian. They then will pass through the gate there, proceed westward to Dahong Bridge, and come upon the entrance to Slim West Lake.

Slim West Lake, in northwestern suburbs of Yangzhou, is a famous scenic area. It is well known for its slimness and beauty. In this scenic area, there are such attractions as Xu Garden, Moon Temple, Lesser Gold Hill, Chui Terrace, White Pagoda, Nine-zigzag Bridge, Fu Village and Five-Pavilion Bridge. Among them, the best are Chui Terrace and Five-Pavilion Bridge.

Chui Terrace is a square pavilion at the west end of a causeway in the lake and is surrounded by water on three sides. Of its four doors, one on each side, all but the one in the west are round. The Five-Pavilion Bridge, as its name states, has five pavilion. Under the bridge there are 15 openings. When the moon is full, in each opening there is a reflection of the moon, similar to the scene of "Three Pools Mirroring the Moon" in Hangzhou's West Lake.

If there is still time, tourists can take a special bus to Guazhou Town in the suburbs, to visit the Guazhou Ferry. Tourists can take a ferry at this islet, where the Grand Canal and Yangze rivers meet, to Zhenjiang.

Standing in front of the Stele Pavilion at the southern tip of the islet, one can see the Yangtze River and the three hills of Zhenjiang. Touring the water country of southern China. Tourists enraptured by the beautiful scenery will be too reluctant to go home.
